Practical Considerations

But lets practically consider what would happen in our modern age should a Christian hear words from God spoken directly into his or her mind.

1.) The Christian would assume, as per Sigmund Freud and all other scientists of the mind with him, that he or she was suffering from a mental illness and seek the help of mental health professionals. And if that Christian happened to not be suffering from mental illness and was in fact hearing the words of God being spoken in his or her mind, such a belief in mental illness would be a disbelief of God of the “Yugoish” sort. That would of course cause other consequences. Even angels have been highly offended by human unbelief, especially from those they have every right to expect belief from. (Luke 1:5-20).

2.) The Christian would lose his or her sense of mental privacy. Yes, as Metaphor 6 makes clear, we really do not have mental privacy, but the sense of it seems to be necessary to human beings while they are growing in grace away from sin and towards fellowship with the Father and the Son. It was after they had sinned that Adam and Eve felt the dire need for mental and physical privacy from God. (Genesis 3:8) And God respects that enough to leave human beings with the illusion of privacy even if it is to their own destruction. (Psalm 14).

3.) The Christian would lose his or her sense of free will. This is the ultimate corollary of 2.) If we do in fact know for sure, beyond all doubt, that “all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do” (Heb 4:13,KJV) then we would lose our sense that our willingness to live with this was voluntary and not involuntary. We would come to feel that it was coercion and not conversion that makes this state of affairs amenable to us. And this would work against the very thing that God created us for - which is to worship Him of our own free will. The only kind of worship that’s worth anything is the worship of a being who has the capacity to refuse to give that worship. That is free will, and God preserves it in us as much as He can because it is precious to Him.

Josh 24:14-15
14 "Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."
(NIV)

Ps 116:15
15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
(KJV)
